My name is Hilmon Sorey. Thank you for your commitment to KPFA and it’s leadership and election process. I have been a long-time listener inspired to membership by KPFA’s new leadership.
Change and sustainability do not come easily to organizations about which stakeholders are passionate, and my background on the board of numerous nonprofits has been in fostering collaboration, transparency, and communication – toward a goal of establishing healthy organizations. The health of an organization, in my experience, stems from adherence to its Mission in action, management and decision-making.
KPFA is integral to the fabric of our community. As an African American father of two young children, I embrace the organizations mission to promote cultural diversity and pluralistic community expression.
The endeavor to contribute to a lasting understanding between individuals of all nations, races, creeds and colors cannot manifest unless and until that understanding and respect is demonstrated on the board of this organization and in its hallways.
KPFA’s commitment to freedom of the press and forum for various viewpoints has been demonstrated over the last year – over and over again in coverage of news events which have rocked our nation and impacted the Bay Area. To continue to fulfill this element of our mission and to provide the unique beacon of journalistic responsibility in what has become a media fog – we must evolve in our understanding of organizational governance and community accountability.
The bedrock upon which the previous three tenets exist is a strong funding base. In the Bay Area – where causes abound and plentiful donors are bombarded with messages regularly, KPFA must develop a board with fund development will and savvy to support staff’s rigorous efforts. This requires creativity, community engagement, and openness on the part of board members.
In the last 15 years I have served on a number of a number of nonprofit and for profit boards in the Bay Area and I’ve developed a reputation as a board member who brings management expertise, an in-depth understanding of finance, fund development strategy, and accountability. If these are tools, which you believe will serve the mission of KPFA, I would be honored to have your vote.
Thank you for reviewing my statement and your ongoing support of KPFA.
